Amanda: wow, I like that a lot little smattering of sounds
00:00:18
quite a recap of some of the most important moments, my
00:00:22
favorite, of course some of the most important moments, my
00:00:30
favorite, of course.
00:00:30
Kip: Well, hello everybody, here we go, welcome in, so welcome
00:00:32
to, I guess, like season 2.9.
00:00:38
Amanda: This is not a seasonal episode.
00:00:40
Kip: This is a special episode about our favorite tv show.
00:00:43
Amanda: well, I mean, they're about Our favorite TV show.
00:00:45
Kip: Well, I mean they're all about our favorite TV show.
00:00:49
Amanda: Oh, I guess, technically , but our overarching feelings
00:00:52
of our favorite TV show, because on, as you will know, from the
00:00:57
date that this comes out.
00:01:00
Kip: It is the 20th anniversary of the Lost season premiere, so
00:01:03
we are recording a special episode about Lost and the
00:01:07
season premiere and the last 20 years of wow, craziness and just
00:01:11
fun and the TV show we love.
00:01:13
Amanda: Yeah, it's insane that it's been 20 years.
00:01:17
Theresa: I know, like it doesn't compute to me it also makes me
00:01:19
feel super old.
00:01:20
Kip: But yeah, no, it doesn't compute that 20 years ago the
00:01:23
first episode came out but yeah, no, it doesn't compute that 20
00:01:26
years ago the first episode came out and I know like we we, when
00:01:28
we talked like recorded the first episode, we talked a
00:01:29
little bit about like our history and stuff and and some
00:01:32
stuff, and I know you guys were late to watching it, like you
00:01:36
didn't watch it live when it first aired.
00:01:38
I remember watching it live when it first aired and that's
00:01:40
just, yeah, very bizarre to me that that was 20 years ago.
00:01:44
Theresa: I was in a apartment on Hargrave Street oh what yeah,
00:01:50
weird, I didn't know that, that I wasn't there very long.
00:01:53
Kip: I was there for the first three episodes of Lost so what
00:01:57
was it like?
00:01:58
Amanda: so you watched the first ever episode as it aired.
00:02:00
Do you remember like seeing ads for it ahead of time?
00:02:04
What do you remember about that time?
00:02:06
Kip: yeah, I remember seeing ads and it was just, um, you know,
00:02:11
00:02:12
It was still very much about you watch tv in the evenings and
00:02:17
that's when you watched good tv , and that's only when it was.
00:02:20
It wasn't so.
00:02:22
I just remember seeing ads, even I think there was teasers,
00:02:26
like the prior spring, before summer, and then it was coming
00:02:30
out in fall and then all all over summer, um, and I I don't
00:02:36
know if, like I know, there was the internet, obviously, but I
00:02:41
don't know if I even would have seen anything online, because I
00:02:44
don't think that was quite a thing yet, like in terms of
00:02:46
there was no YouTube, there was no no, I think YouTube came
00:02:50
either out around the same time but wasn't like it wasn't like a
00:02:53
thing yet, or it came a little, a couple years after.
00:02:56
Amanda: There was no Facebook, there was no that is why.
00:03:00
Twitter, no, myspace, even I'm not sure yet Reddit, like all
00:03:04
the things that you've kind of come to, you know, because if
00:03:07
you were to go on Reddit today you would see a bunch of talk
00:03:12
about Lost.
00:03:13
Kip: Oh yeah, like I would say Reddit is one of the biggest
00:03:16
Lost fandoms right now.
00:03:17
Like they're huge the subreddit for Lost and there's tons of
00:03:21
Facebook pages, which is hilarious.
00:03:22
Like it's everywhere.
00:03:23
20 years on and I I think it's still very strong as a of a show
00:03:29
and it's still very much in like popular culture and it's.
00:03:34
We'll talk about this more later probably but the fact that
00:03:36
it's just kind of had a resurgence in the states because
00:03:39
it's just started streaming on Netflix there, um, we've been
00:03:42
able to stream it in Canada on Disney plus for years, I think
00:03:45
so, but, but yeah, it's just it's, it's huge again yeah, I
00:03:51
know in all of the groups are like who's watching lost again.
00:03:54
Theresa: And I'm like, thanks netflix, it really netflix us is
00:03:59
a good show, probably.
00:04:01
Amanda: I know it's polarizing to say this because a lot of
00:04:04
people think it's not a good binging show and that it's, but
00:04:07
when it comes to it all being out now and the fact that you
00:04:10
could just binge the whole series, I it is probably a good
00:04:13
binging show.
00:04:14
It might not be the best streaming like.
00:04:16
Kip: It might not have worked on a streaming network if it was
00:04:18
released today, but I definitely think it is a good binge show
00:04:22
yeah, I think you make a really good distinction, like if it was
00:04:25
released to down to streaming service, it wouldn't be the loss
00:04:28
that we know and love, but made today.
00:04:31
It still works as a bingeable show.
00:04:33
Like me and and dan just watched it last year from season
00:04:37
one to the final and like he had never seen it before, it was
00:04:42
all new to him.
00:04:43
He would want it to keep watching.
00:04:44
Theresa: Wanted to keep watching .
00:04:45
It's so addicting it is, and it's quite the quite the
00:04:49
commitment too, and that says a lot about lost, that you know
00:04:53
it's six seasons.
00:04:54
Of how many episodes?
00:04:55
119 episodes and you binged it, yeah like we're not talking
00:04:59
like 22 minute episodes here, we're talking like 40 plus, yeah
00:05:03
.
00:05:04
Kip: So that says a lot about it yeah, so did you immediately
00:05:08
love it immediately, like I immediately loved it when
00:05:12
charlie says guys, where are we?
00:05:15
I I viscerally remember that moment, thinking I love this
00:05:18
fucking show.
00:05:18
It was so good, like that was just so cool after the I think
00:05:22
that was right after they shot the polar bear and yeah, all
00:05:24
these like crazy things were going on.
00:05:26
So, yeah, I immediately loved it and watched it religiously
00:05:29
since then.
00:05:31
Amanda: So I think we should say this is going to be.
00:05:33
We try to keep things spoiler free.
00:05:36
We try to kind of do everything unless you go on our Patreon.
00:05:38
But for this we are going to just give a little disclaimer.
00:05:42
We are going to talk about the whole series and bits and pieces
00:05:45
of it because, quite honestly, to celebrate 20 years of this
00:05:48
show, I think we kind of have to um.
00:05:52
So you know, one of the things I kind of you know, I think
00:05:56
everyone who hasn't even maybe watched it but has heard of it
00:06:00
knows that it gets quite like.
00:06:02
A lot of people don't like the ending.
00:06:04
A lot of people kind of fall off around season four or five.
00:06:06
Um, did any, did either of you ever have like that moment with
00:06:12
loss, like I know, obviously we're here talking about we all
00:06:14
love it, but you know you can ebb and flow with something and
00:06:16
you, it has its highs and lows.
00:06:17
Was there ever a time for either of you that you were like
00:06:20
, did you feel that it went off the rails for a bit?
00:06:23
Did anything feel weird?
00:06:25
Because I actually have an opinion on why I feel that
00:06:27
didn't happen for me, but I'd be curious to see what you guys
00:06:30
think, teresa.
00:06:33
Theresa: It would help if I remembered more than I do.
00:06:36
Kip: You remember right up to when we stopped watching?
00:06:38
Well, ask Teresa after the end of this podcast.
00:06:40
Theresa: We've been trying so hard to remember what happened.
00:06:45
Amanda: Well, we can just say something.
00:06:46
Like you know, it definitely does, like we all know, this
00:06:48
show that aired starting, you know, september 22nd 2004 the
00:06:54
pilot to the finale.
00:06:56
If you watch just the pilot and just the finale, you would not
00:07:00
know you were watching the same show, other than the fact that
00:07:03
they have the same characters yeah, right, and that's not the
00:07:07
case for a lot of shows, and so you know like I.
00:07:11
Kip: It's funny because I remember, just from seeing all
00:07:15
the stuff online over the years, that season three, like early
00:07:22
to mid season three, is sort of known as like a, a low point,
00:07:28
like it slows down.
00:07:29
It's just they don't, and that was kind of the time, I think,
00:07:33
when they were trying to get the network to kind of give them an
00:07:37
end date, but the network was like no, we want to milk this
00:07:39
for as long as we can keep making it, keep making it.
00:07:41
So they kind of had to like stretch out the stories that
00:07:44
they knew.
00:07:44
So when I watched it again last year in full, I was kind of
00:07:49
like, oh, here it comes.
00:07:49
And then I didn't find that like it didn't.
00:07:53
I found it was actually quite.
00:07:55
I really enjoyed the story from season three, the full thing.
00:08:01
Like I think I can recognize things like a lot of the fans
00:08:06
say you know when they're in the cages.
00:08:08
That's sort of like uh, it goes on a bit too long and I can kind
00:08:12
of get that, but I don't agree that it like was a low point for
00:08:16
the show no um, I I can understand why some people might
00:08:20
be like, oh my god, they've been in these cages for a few
00:08:22
episodes already and that is a long time when, especially when
00:08:24
you're watching it week to week.
00:08:25
But, um, I don't know if this is going to be like super
00:08:30
polarizing or like a, a hot take or um, unpopular opinion
00:08:35
whatever word you want to use but season there was a few
00:08:39
episodes in season six that I just could have done without.
00:08:44
Yeah, I could have done without to be honest, and when, when I
00:08:49
re-watched it last year, it was funny because I thought those
00:08:53
were the episodes that I loved.
00:08:55
But they were the ones that were all about like kind of the
00:08:59
mythology and and the like, more secrets of the island.
00:09:03
And I remember thinking, oh, I love all that stuff about the
00:09:06
island, I love all that mystery and the and the myths and all
00:09:10
that stuff.
00:09:10
But I was just kind of like I kind of wish less is more with
00:09:15
some of those things like we don't need these kind of hokey
00:09:18
explanations for some of these things, and so those were
00:09:21
probably the moments where I kind of felt like a low point
00:09:25
for me.
00:09:27
Amanda: Well, it's interesting because you know you're kind of
00:09:31
sitting here now.
00:09:31
How many times have you rewatched it?
00:09:32
In its entirety, do you think?
00:09:35
Kip: Well, the first season, first, second and third season,
00:09:39
probably like four or five times , because I would watch each
00:09:48
season again before the next season aired with the dvds, but
00:09:51
so like I had only seen season six once because I never
00:09:53
re-watched it after okay, so that's interesting when I just
00:09:57
saw it.
00:09:57
This year.
00:09:57
Amanda: That was the only the only time I'd re-watched season
00:09:59
six because I wonder then if it's just that the mystery of
00:10:02
not knowing was so compelling that when you found out you were
00:10:05
like in awe.
00:10:06
And then, when you thought back on it, you're like, yeah, I
00:10:08
didn't really need to know that.
00:10:10
Um, because it's so funny, because there's so many people
00:10:13
out there who say the opposite, that they, they don't know
00:10:15
enough yeah right.
00:10:17
So I think, if anything that would be what is a hot take is
00:10:20
that you're kind of saying that you wish you knew even less,
00:10:24
because people are saying you know a lot of people's issues.
00:10:26
You know there's two big things you'll hear if you're new to
00:10:30
lost and have never heard about it.
00:10:33
Is you're going to hear people say they didn't like the ending,
00:10:35
or you're going to say people hear people say or they could
00:10:38
say both really.
00:10:39
Uh, that not enough, we didn't find out anything answer't.
00:10:43
Answer the questions where's the polar bear from?
00:10:45
Kip: even though they answer that they answer a lot of
00:10:48
questions.
00:10:48
They really do funny that you're.
00:10:49
Amanda: You're sitting here being like less is more and it's
00:10:51
like people being like I want to know where exactly yeah but
00:10:55
you know, I never felt that it was bad.
00:10:58
Um, and it's super funny because I also think that a big piece
00:11:03
of it is that the way they kind of like work up to it.
00:11:07
Like at the end of the day, this is a science fiction show
00:11:12
and people don't know that and I don't even really think of it
00:11:16
that way.
00:11:17
And I was at my book club the other day and we had read like a
00:11:20
time travel book and someone said like what's everyone's
00:11:25
favorite time travel stories?
00:11:26
And I was like oh, I don't like time travel and I I never like
00:11:30
take it in as media.
00:11:31
And then someone's like don't you love lost?
00:11:33
that's so funny and I was like oh yeah, I guess there is time
00:11:39
travel and lost yeah, there absolutely a lot of it's a fair
00:11:43
bit and like pretty monsters and and immortal people and like,
00:11:49
oh, it's like it's a sci-fi fantasy at the heart of it.
00:11:51
But I think that, like, at the end of the day, what loss is for
00:11:55
me is about these characters and they could have probably put
00:11:59
them in almost any situation and I would have followed that
00:12:03
Because of how much I was, like, invested in yeah.
00:12:06
Theresa: That's fair.
00:12:07
Amanda: The lives of these people and whatever route they
00:12:09
took, and I think that says a lot about, like, how they hooked
00:12:13
you in and those.
00:12:14
And I think for me a big part of that Is I really do love the
00:12:17
back, the flashbacks.
00:12:19
Kip: Yeah.
00:12:19
In season one, two and three, oh yeah, two and three, oh yeah
00:12:31
yeah, same.
00:12:31
Um, while you're still thinking of your answer, javier grillo
00:12:33
mars watch like the producer writer guy involved with lost.
00:12:34
He wrote a really good article for vanity fair this summer in
00:12:37
anticipation of the 20th anniversary it's really good and
00:12:41
he talks about like how it really.
00:12:45
He used a few examples of how, like when a show or a movie is
00:12:48
super successful, everybody tries to emulate it.
00:12:51
So, like when die hard came out , it was like it's like when
00:12:54
they're proposing the movie or tv show, it's like die hard, but
00:12:56
it's in a hospital.
00:12:57
Or it's like die hard but it's on an island or and then he used
00:13:00
er as like the next one.
00:13:01
that was like just in the zeitgeist, and how amazing, how
00:13:05
Lost hasn't really been replicated or remade, which in
00:13:10
and of itself, in this day and age, is a huge like.
00:13:12
Yeah, that's telling, says something, but he focuses a lot
00:13:16
about how, as writers in the writer's room, their job so much
00:13:20
was just like character development, character
00:13:22
development, character development, character
00:13:24
development, character development and like.
00:13:26
Amanda: that was the goal of the show was to tell a story of
00:13:29
really good characters and like and so to your point, it's just
00:13:33
that made it a good show and that is what I think would make
00:13:37
that like when we talk about if it could be remade and if it
00:13:39
could, whatever I think that piece of it is very is what
00:13:44
would make for good tv still this day, because I I do think
00:13:47
it was a bit ahead of its time in that way too, in the sense
00:13:51
that the character development was so integral where, like a
00:13:53
lot of like prime time storytelling back then was a lot
00:13:58
more story driven and a lot more like like we've talked
00:14:02
about how you know, like episodic versus serial but even
00:14:04
in the more serial ones, you know, like x files was quite had
00:14:07
some big overarching things and shows like that.
00:14:10
But you know, and there there's people who would tell me that
00:14:13
the x file characters are developed etc.
00:14:15
But it was never about the characters as much as it is, and
00:14:20
so I feel like that's another way.
00:14:22
It was kind of ahead of its time , because now we have shows that
00:14:26
are so heavy into, like you know, like scenes of a marriage.
00:14:31
I don't know if you guys have ever seen that.
00:14:32
I think it might just be a mini series, but still like there's
00:14:35
like episodes where it's just like the characters talking to
00:14:39
each other for like the whole episode you know, and stuff like
00:14:43
that is much more common now, and I do think they were ahead
00:14:46
of their time on that too.
00:14:48
Kip: And I think it's funny because I would say another show
00:14:50
from a bit earlier than Lost.
00:14:52
That is, I think, like peak TV or known as like the Sopranos
00:14:58
was also so character driven and like it's.
00:15:00
Those two shows like stand out to me as really good
00:15:05
storytelling that focuses on characters that you get to know,
00:15:07
and like there's so much dimension to characters and the
00:15:11
thing about Lost is that it was so many characters.
00:15:15
Amanda: Well, I thought it was on prime time Because, at the
00:15:17
end of the day, hbo was always a little bit more, because they
00:15:20
didn't have to bring in advertisers.
00:15:23
Kip: That's right.
00:15:23
Amanda: Because they had subscribers.
00:15:24
But if you look at how many people watch the Sopranos, the
00:15:27
Sopranos is probably not a great example, because lots of people
00:15:29
watch the Sopranos, but the average of even like HBO's
00:15:32
highest rated show versus what like CSI was getting at the time
00:15:37
was insane.
00:15:38
But then Lost did as we know.
00:15:40
Every week we hear the numbers from Kippy.
00:15:43
It was pulling in like astronomical viewership as well,
00:15:48
so yeah most if I'm gonna guess in that vein.
00:15:55
Theresa: I'm gonna give you some stats oh my god, yes, do you
00:15:57
want to answer the question or um, I think the only thing I can
00:16:01
think of where I wouldn't say it's a low point but I found I
00:16:04
wasn't as engaged was the stuff with like Dogen.
00:16:09
Kip: Oh yeah.
00:16:10
Amanda: Which is also season six , is it not?
00:16:12
Theresa: I found it like kind of slow and like kind of like yeah
00:16:16
like I wasn't like hooked into it.
00:16:18
I was like kind of like OK, like let's go like let's go.
00:16:25
Kip: Yeah, it was like it was weird to introduce this brand
00:16:26
new character and this brand new like scenes and and sets and
00:16:28
all these like yeah new, almost entirely new story I felt like
00:16:32
it just didn't like fit for me very well yeah, I agree with you
00:16:36
Amanda: that was tough and I and I do think that that was all
00:16:39
kind of, you know, season six.
00:16:41
It was tough, I think, for them because, you know, I think they
00:16:45
wanted to make it clear what they were happening and I think
00:16:50
we, we all have to just say right now, again, spoiler
00:16:54
everyone on this podcast.
00:16:55
I think I speak for everyone, I know I do.
00:16:57
We all do not believe they were dead the whole time we agree
00:17:01
with the only, in our opinion, interpretation, which is that
00:17:08
season six, what they call the flash sideways, is the
00:17:12
characters in purgatory or whatever you want to name it for
00:17:15
your belief system or your whatever different planes of
00:17:17
energy, whatever you might believe, working their way to
00:17:23
this absolution right this afterlife.
00:17:26
And so I do think that maybe it's hard to tell, like you know
00:17:30
, what was thrown in, to distract from that what was
00:17:34
thrown in, because, yes, they were trying to stretch it to 18
00:17:36
episodes instead of 12.
00:17:37
But I do, I do feel like Dogen was maybe not, and I I mean, I'm
00:17:41
not Carlton Kuser.
00:17:42
Damon Lindelof, maybe he was, but I didn't feel like he was
00:17:44
like a part of the grand plan from.
00:17:47
Kip: No, I didn't either.
00:17:49
Amanda: So that's always hard.
00:17:50
I think, yeah, you know.
00:17:52
Kip: Yeah, exactly, okay.
00:17:53
So some quick facts.
00:17:54
These are mostly about the premiere, since it was 20 years
00:18:01
ago today it premiered, so it premiered September 22nd 2004.
00:18:04
The first season contained 25 episodes.
00:18:08
It aired wednesdays at 8 pm.
00:18:08
Season one has an astronomical approval rating on rotten
00:18:12
tomatoes of 94 holy smokes yeah, the pilot episode had 18.6
00:18:17
million viewers and the entire first season averaged about 17.6
00:18:21
million.
00:18:22
Theresa: That's huge that's.
00:18:23
That's massive.
00:18:25
Kip: The first season was nominated for 12 emmy awards and
00:18:27
won six, including outstanding um drama series oh wow, in their
00:18:34
first season, yeah, isn't that cool.
00:18:36
And then the premiere cost between uh 10 and 14 million
00:18:39
dollars that's roughly 17 to 23 million dollars today and and
00:18:44
Disney fired ABC executive Lloyd Braun for greenlighting it
00:18:47
because it costs so much money.
00:18:49
But he was the first person to propose I would like to do a
00:18:52
show that's like Castaway meets Survivor, and it was his idea
00:18:56
and he actually went through a few different producers until he
00:18:58
got to.
00:18:58
Jj Abrams in order to make this .
00:19:02
Amanda: That's super cool.
00:19:02
I wonder what Lloyd Braun thinks of how.
00:19:04
Kip: Yeah, I would love to hear that.
00:19:06
Amanda: Yeah, no, kidding, that's so funny.
00:19:08
That is the budget of some TV series at that time's entire
00:19:15
season, entire season.
00:19:16
Kip: Yeah, that's crazy.
00:19:18
That was unheard of back then.
00:19:21
Amanda: Yeah, that was going to cost someone a job, or Lloyd.
00:19:24
Theresa: That's a lot of money.
00:19:25
Sorry, that's yeah I that was going to cost someone a job.
00:19:25
That's a lot of money.
00:19:25
Amanda: Sorry, you had to be the scapegoat, Lloyd.
00:19:27
Someone had to pay for that.
00:19:29
Kip: And I don't know if you remember, but Lloyd is the
00:19:30
person who says previously on Lost I hope he gets good
00:19:34
royalties for that.
00:19:39
He was so mad at Lloyd.
00:19:40
No royalties for you.
00:19:43
Amanda: That's crazy though yeah yeah, I know it's good.
00:19:45
Um, yeah, theresa, I think you said you had some fun stuff for
00:19:50
us to do, because you know, at the end of the day.
00:19:51
We're going to talk some serious stuff here.
00:19:53
We're going to talk some more, you know, deep stuff, but at the
00:19:57
end of the day it's a celebration so we got to do some
00:19:59
fun stuff here okay, so this is um.
00:20:03
Theresa: I did this today, not at work, just just today, just
00:20:11
today um so this is one of those fun like buzzfeed quizzes where
00:20:15
the questions have nothing to do with what okay, like the
00:20:18
thing is, but it'll tell you.
00:20:20
So you spend a day doing whatever you want and I'll tell
00:20:23
you which lost character you are .
00:20:24
Okay, so I did this and, like, I got saeed which?
00:20:28
Kip: was interesting.
00:20:29
Okay, I was like all right, not bad.
00:20:31
Theresa: So I don't know who wants to go first.
00:20:33
It's very quick okay, keep go, I'll go okay, who are you going
00:20:37
to hang out with?
00:20:38
Your parents, your significant other, your pet, your best
00:20:41
friend, me, myself and I, or a few friends?
00:20:46
Kip: I'm gonna pick pet, sorry guys.
00:20:49
Theresa: No, that's fine you have a day completely free.
00:20:53
What are you looking forward to doing?
00:20:54
Going to the movies, going to the beach, going to the
00:20:57
bookstore, playing sports, taking a cooking class or going
00:21:00
swimming?
00:21:01
Kip: oh, uh, I'll go with bookstore, okay.
00:21:09
Theresa: What are you going to eat?
00:21:10
Mcdonald's Chick-fil-A I know it's not Red Lobster Tropical
00:21:16
Smoothie, cafe Olive Garden or Panera.
00:21:19
Kip: Oh, probably Olive Garden, even though it gives me tummy
00:21:21
aches.
00:21:23
Amanda: I think everyone gets a tummy ache in Olive Garden.
00:21:24
Theresa: Yeah, I know what movie are you watching Inside Out 2,
00:21:28
Avengers, Endgame, Mean Girls 2, Armageddon, the Notebook or
00:21:32
Titanic?
00:21:33
Kip: Oh Armageddon.
00:21:33
The Notebook or Titanic, oh Armageddon.
00:21:37
Theresa: Armageddon.
00:21:38
And what will you do after?
00:21:40
Go straight to sleep, listen to music, scroll on social media
00:21:44
binge, watch my favorite shows, take a bath or read.
00:21:50
Kip: After a movie probably do some scrolling.
00:21:56
Theresa: Okay, after a movie probably do some scrolling.
00:21:57
Okay, which season of Lost is your favorite?
00:21:59
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 the most important question there is
00:22:02
that's a tough one that is a tough one.
00:22:14
Kip: I don't want to fuck it up, but like Just go with your
00:22:18
heart, the one where they're in Darmaville when Sawyer's in the
00:22:21
70s Is that four or five.
00:22:23
Amanda: Five.
00:22:24
Kip: Okay.
00:22:26
Theresa: And finally, who is your favorite character out of
00:22:28
these options?
00:22:28
Locke, Shannon, hurley, son Juliet and Rose.
00:22:32
Kip: Oh, I'm Hurley.
00:22:37
Theresa: All right, so yours is Charlie.
00:22:40
Amanda: Oh no.
00:22:42
Theresa: Yeah, that was surprising.
00:22:43
I tried not to react, but I was like okay.
00:22:46
No, all right, amanda who are you going to hang out with?
00:22:51
Your parents, your significant other, your pet, a few friends,
00:22:55
okay, yeah, I probably could have answered that for you.
00:22:56
Amanda: That's the only one I remember, though.
00:22:59
Theresa: The other ones were me myself and I.
00:23:01
No, no, I meant oh okay, you have a day completely free.
00:23:05
What are you looking forward to doing?
00:23:06
Going to the movies?
00:23:06
Going to the beach?
00:23:14
Amanda: Bookstore, Playing sports, taking a cooking class
00:23:15
going swimming, going to the beach?
00:23:16
Theresa: Where are you going to eat?
00:23:17
Mcdonald's Chick-fil-A Red Lobster Tropical Smoothie Cafe,
00:23:22
olive Garden, panera.
00:23:24
Amanda: I'll also say Olive Garden.
00:23:26
Kip: That's fair, that's also what I said Tropical.
00:23:27
Smoothie Cafe sounds interesting.
00:23:28
I've never heard of it.
00:23:29
Me neither.
00:23:29
I kind of want to go there.
00:23:30
Theresa: I know I wouldn't mind a tropical smoothie.
00:23:33
What movie are you watching?
00:23:34
Inside Out 2, armageddon Avengers Endgame.
00:23:40
Amanda: Notebook Mean Girls 2, Titanic Inside Out 2.
00:23:42
This is also a very new quiz for a show that aired 20 years
00:23:45
ago.
00:23:45
It is very new, I think it came out pretty recently.
00:23:48
Theresa: What will you do after?
00:23:49
Go straight to sleep.
00:23:50
Amanda: Scroll.
00:23:50
I know this one too.
00:23:51
Scroll after Go straight to sleep.
00:23:52
I know this one too.
00:23:53
Theresa: What's your favorite season of Lost Three?
00:23:57
Oh, the one we're going to record next Interesting.
00:24:01
Amanda: We'll see for that finale.
00:24:03
Theresa: That finale.
00:24:04
Kip: The bomb.
00:24:05
Amanda: What, and Sawyer and Kate do it.
00:24:09
Kip: Is that what happens?
00:24:11
Amanda: I'm just spoiling everything now.
00:24:13
Theresa: Is that in a cage?
00:24:13
Oh, I remember the cage and I remember thinking okay yeah,
00:24:16
juliet, oh yeah, yeah Juliet.
00:24:18
Amanda: You're gonna see, juliet in the first episode.
00:24:20
Kip: Yeah, it's also one of the sorry.
00:24:23
Theresa: I was so excited.
00:24:24
Who's your favorite character out of these options?
00:24:27
Locke Shannon Hurley.
00:24:28
Sun Juliet Rose.
00:24:29
Juliet you're Claire, oh Claire , we're a couple.
00:24:35
You guys are meant to be.
00:24:37
Amanda: That's another you know arguable point, I guess, and
00:24:41
you're Saeed.
00:24:42
Theresa: And I'm Saeed, you and I both go crazy.
00:24:44
Kip: in season six I die.
00:24:48
Amanda: Season three is also my favorite because of all the
00:24:50
Charlie stuff.
00:24:52
Theresa: I don't remember anything about this season.
00:24:54
Amanda: You have not.
00:24:55
Penny's boat is this season oh, oh sad season three is a great
00:25:02
season it's a great.
00:25:03
I actually think season four might be what you're thinking of
00:25:05
I think so, because isn't it?
00:25:07
Season five's when they come back.
00:25:09
He's still there, but season no , we don't have to redo the
00:25:11
whole thing.
00:25:11
Theresa: No, no, I'm just gonna redo it myself for you.
00:25:13
Kip: I remember your answers um but yeah, I I think it is season
00:25:16
four because at the end of season three we have to go back
00:25:21
yeah and then season four, does the light go off?
00:25:24
Yes, yep, it is.
00:25:26
So.
00:25:26
Yeah, season four is the one I was thinking of yeah, yeah,
00:25:30
because season five is one where they, where most of the time
00:25:32
travel happens like the crazy time travel, yeah, exactly
00:25:35
unfortunately you're still charlie get out of here, yeah
00:25:38
even with that slight change okay change my?
00:25:40
No, just kidding you're still charlie.
00:25:42
Theresa: Okay, I have one more.
00:25:43
It's called the impossible lost quiz oh, can we do it together.
00:25:47
Amanda: You guys can do it together I did it I did it by
00:25:48
myself, and what'd you get?
00:25:50
Theresa: I'll tell you after okay, or should I just say no,
00:25:54
yeah, no, no, tell us after okay , how many days had the
00:25:58
survivors from the front row of the plane been on the island
00:26:00
before we met the survivors from the tail section of the plane?
00:26:03
Kip: 48 perfect.
00:26:06
Theresa: That's your answer.
00:26:07
What are the last words that desmond says to jack when they
00:26:10
meet in the stadium?
00:26:10
Well, maybe we'll meet again.
00:26:12
Nice to meet you, brother.
00:26:14
Go, gotta press some buttons.
00:26:17
See you in another life, brother.
00:26:20
Amanda: See you in another life.
00:26:21
Theresa: Which of these is not the name of a lost season finale
00:26:25
?
00:26:25
Live Together, die Alone Exodus the Flash Forward Through the
00:26:30
Looking Glass Flash Forward.
00:26:30
The flash forward through the looking glass Flash forward.
00:26:35
What were the circumstances?
00:26:41
Kip: that led to Rose and Bernard meeting Rose's car stuck
00:26:43
in the snow, rose's car stuck in the snow.
00:26:45
Theresa: Which member?
00:26:45
Let's see if we can answer it without the multiple choice
00:26:47
first, okay, which member of the Lost cast also has a leading
00:26:51
role in the Hobbit trilogy?
00:26:53
Kip: Oh, dominic Monaghan, oh shit, you guys have to agree
00:26:56
Eventually, lily.
00:26:58
The Hobbit yeah the.
00:26:59
Amanda: Hobbit.
00:26:59
If it was Lord of the Rings, it would be.
00:27:00
That's right.
00:27:01
Theresa: Which Lost writer wrote the most episodes?
00:27:07
Kip: I think we need the multiple choice.
00:27:08
Theresa: We might need the multiple choice Carlton Cuse,
00:27:10
Adam Horowitz, Damon Lindelof, Edward Kitsis.
00:27:14
Amanda: Well, that's going to be hard.
00:27:15
Kip: I don't know.
00:27:15
I think Adam Horowitz maybe.
00:27:18
I don't know.
00:27:19
Did Damon and Carlton write that many though?
00:27:22
Amanda: They wrote all the big ones, yeah, but like Did they
00:27:23
write that many?
00:27:24
Kip: There's so many in between the big ones, right.
00:27:26
Amanda: Adam Horowitz.
00:27:28
Theresa: You guys agree.
00:27:29
Yeah, okay agree, yeah, okay, on average how many people
00:27:39
viewed?
00:27:40
Kip: season one or season one episode?
00:27:41
What on abc season one episodes like all of like what was the
00:27:43
season one average?
00:27:44
Theresa: I think so.
00:27:45
I think that's 17, is that an?
00:27:46
Amanda: answer no oh is 17 an answer no what are the?
00:27:50
Theresa: 15.69 million 200,.
00:27:53
2 billion 12.87 million.
00:27:56
Kip: Oh, 15.
00:27:57
So I'll go with 15 then.
00:28:00
Theresa: What was the model of the plane that Boone and Locke
00:28:03
found hanging off the edge of a cliff?
00:28:04
Kip: Beachcomber.
00:28:05
Sorry, is that an answer?
00:28:07
No, oh.
00:28:09
Amanda: We might need the multiple choices.
00:28:11
Theresa: Nigeria Power 665.
00:28:13
Ecomobile 999.
00:28:17
Fuel Rocket 01.
00:28:18
Beechcraft 18.
00:28:20
Amanda: Oh, Beechcraft Close.
00:28:22
Theresa: Which of these was not a Dharma Initiative research
00:28:25
station?
00:28:25
Amanda: Ecomobile.
00:28:27
Theresa: The Arrow, the Wing, the Flame, the Staff.
00:28:35
Kip: The Wing, amanda's.
00:28:36
Like I'm not sure.
00:28:36
Do we agree?
00:28:37
Like, do we agree?
00:28:37
Amanda: I'm not sure you can see on her face.
00:28:39
Theresa: I don't know about that one, and this is super easy.
00:28:42
What?
00:28:42
This is not an impossible quiz, I just need to say, but it's
00:28:46
the hardest one I could find that was not really long.
00:28:49
Yeah, because all the other ones were like hundreds of
00:28:51
questions.
00:28:51
I'm like we don't have time for that.
00:28:52
We need something quick and dirty.
00:28:54
What was the surname of Ben's false identity, henry?
00:28:57
Gail okay, you got 90%, wow 90% what did we get wrong?
00:29:05
oh, what did you get wrong?
00:29:07
That's a good question.
00:29:07
Oh wait, hold on.
00:29:08
Now it's giving me an ad.
00:29:11
Amanda: Close the ad we know we got that one right.
00:29:15
Theresa: The correct answer to which Lost writer wrote the most
00:29:18
episodes was Damon Lindelof.
00:29:21
Oh, it was.
00:29:22
Amanda: Sorry.
00:29:22
Theresa: Damon.
00:29:22
Kip: Interesting.
00:29:25
Theresa: That's the one.
00:29:25
I got that one right, but I didn't get the finale one.
00:29:36
I was like I don't know.
00:29:38
I barely know any of the episodes.
00:29:40
Amanda: You thought a show that is all about mystery named one
00:29:43
of their season finales.
00:29:44
I wasn't at work, Amanda.
00:29:47
Theresa: I was not distracted.
00:29:49
The flash forward.
00:29:51
I'm not saying that my mind was in the best place.
00:29:54
Still 90%, Very good yeah that's what I thought,
00:29:58
especially for something that was quote-unquote impossible.
00:30:00
Kip: Yeah, so not even close to impossible.
00:30:03
Amanda: No very easy.
00:30:04
Teresa also came up with some really fun questions earlier
00:30:09
that we can answer.
00:30:09
We've already talked about a few of them.
00:30:11
A good one is okay.
00:30:14
Whose character growth do you like the most, and why?
00:30:18
Theresa: My favorite one.
00:30:20
See, I feel like I have an advantage.
00:30:22
Kip: I wrote these questions, so I had thought about it already.
00:30:25
Theresa: My favorite one is Sawyer's.
00:30:27
I think that from who he is in the very first episode to who he
00:30:32
is at the end are like two different people.
00:30:35
It's like night and day and you just see this growth through
00:30:37
his relationship with juliet.
00:30:39
You see his relationship with kate even like, just like little
00:30:43
bits of growth until he becomes like the man that he is and
00:30:48
like could always be, but like his circumstance, like led him a
00:30:52
different path, kind of thing.
00:30:53
Like I think that that 70s era was so good for him.
00:30:58
Amanda: Yeah, I love his growth, yeah me too, and and it's very
00:31:02
clear in his flash sideways um, I think that honestly, I really
00:31:08
like jack's growth too, though like I think jack you know
00:31:13
that's probably a pretty obvious answer but I think he really
00:31:16
does like change and and, quite honestly, I think the best
00:31:24
example of how far jack has gone is that he can walk through
00:31:29
those doors into the church at the end, because the jack of
00:31:35
real time lost life would never have been able to do that and to
00:31:42
accept that this was kind of it and to kind of move on right.
00:31:47
That is like the biggest ask he could ever have.
00:31:49
And that's not even talking about all the stuff he does to
00:31:52
get where you know.
00:31:53
You know when he says things like Locke was right all along,
00:31:56
blah, blah, blah, blah, that kind of stuff and like letting
00:31:58
go of you know all of that stuff .
00:32:01
But I just think he, by the end , is very able to accept where
00:32:09
he is at, as opposed to where he thinks he should be, which is
00:32:14
in control and controlling everything.
00:32:16
He just is more okay with things happening that happen.
00:32:21
Theresa: He learned to let go he learned to let go.
00:32:25
Kip: Yeah.
00:32:25
Yeah, I was going to say Jack too, but in the in the interest
00:32:33
of having someone else's character development, I'll go
00:32:36
with Claire.
00:32:36
Oh, because when she had that squirrel baby it was very
00:32:40
different Development.
00:32:41
Amanda: I mean I guess we've never no one said development
00:32:44
had to be positive.
00:32:45
Oh my God, that's so funny.
00:32:46
Theresa: I did not expect that answer at all.
00:32:49
Kip: Oh my goodness, oh, that's hilarious, she goes wild.
00:32:52
Well, she's been traumatized oh , big time, yeah messed up that
00:32:58
was.
00:32:59
I can't even imagine like I feel like I would have also gone
00:33:02
kind of crazy, honestly but back to jack, like I think for him,
00:33:06
him he would be the one I I like the most.
00:33:08
And just seeing him accept taking leadership of the island,
00:33:15
even though he knows it's probably going to be brief, just
00:33:18
to help get these people away and he goes from season one well
00:33:25
, for a few seasons of being adamant that the island is the
00:33:29
worst thing possible and he has to get off and he has to help
00:33:31
everybody else get off that's his only job to being the
00:33:35
protector of the island.
00:33:36
I think that's huge oh yeah, 100 yeah so we kind of already
00:33:42
talked about it.
00:33:43
Amanda: But because we talked about what our favorite season
00:33:45
is, so I feel we might as well, and I think I already kind of
00:33:48
answered this.
00:33:49
But you know what is your favorite season and why, and I
00:33:51
had said during the quiz, mine is season three and I made some
00:33:54
jokes about it.
00:33:54
Obviously it's not because Kate and Sawyer hook up, that was a
00:33:57
joke, um, but I do like, like, for me, season three really, you
00:34:04
know, you could really say for every season, but season three
00:34:06
to me is really where the show changes right and you realize
00:34:11
the expansiveness of this world that this show has created and
00:34:17
the others, and you know what they've done, and that kind of
00:34:24
world building is insane to me.
00:34:25
It has some of the best like episodes, um, and a lot of
00:34:32
really big moments, um, does it drag a little bit here and there
00:34:36
?
00:34:36
Sure, but you get an explosive premiere, you get an explosive
00:34:41
finale and you get some some really interesting things kind
00:34:44
of along the way, when we had, uh, the director and producer of
00:34:48
the documentary that's coming out right away, um, they talked
00:34:50
about through the looking glass being a very important one of
00:34:53
their favorite episodes.
00:34:54
That is the season three finale and I am so excited to talk
00:34:57
about it.
00:34:58
Kip: Mm-hmm.
00:34:59
Theresa: Mm-hmm.
00:34:59
Kip: Yeah, season three is really, really, really good.
00:35:02
I mean you have Juliet and, like Ben, full time, so it's
00:35:05
like obviously it's going to be good.
00:35:09
Theresa: Yeah, mm-hmm.
00:35:11
Kip: Mm-hmm, what's your favorite episode of season three
00:35:13
?
00:35:16
Amanda: I really like greatest hits.
00:35:17
You do, I know.
00:35:18
Kip: I know it's so cute.
00:35:24
I know that's going to be a tough one.
00:35:27
Amanda: It's going to be a tough one.
00:35:28
It's a Charlie-centric one.
00:35:33
Kip: I love him in this episode.
00:35:34
Amanda: I was going to say he has a good you know what he has
00:35:36
a good you know what again we said, there's gonna be spoilers
00:35:38
charlie dies in season three.
00:35:39
He goes out of hero good.
00:35:41
Kip: He has a good redemption arc you want to talk about
00:35:44
character development.
00:35:44
Amanda: His is actually probably pretty decent too yeah um.
00:35:48
Is it enough to make me look back on him with any sort of
00:35:52
overall positivity?
00:35:53
No, no.
00:35:54
Is Dominic Monaghan's hand tattooed on most Lost fans'
00:35:58
bodies?
00:35:59
Kip: Probably.
00:36:00
Amanda: Because he's just, it's a very.
00:36:02
He is part of what is one of the most infamous moments of the
00:36:05
show Iconic I like Greatest Hits.
00:36:08
I like Through the Looking Glass.
00:36:10
I like whatever episode it is where he performs surgery, the
00:36:17
actual surgery on Ben.
00:36:18
Oh yeah, yeah, I like that episode a lot.
00:36:23
Kip: Yeah, I would say like Not Penny's Boat.
00:36:24
Yeah, that's a crazy moment.
00:36:26
I think Exposé is in season three.
00:36:30
Very good episode.
00:36:35
Amanda: Teresa, while you're doing that, tell us.
00:36:37
If you said season four is your favorite, is it because of that
00:36:40
?
00:36:40
70s Sawyer?
00:36:42
Kip: Yeah, I just I love Sawyer and I think it's not what's the
00:36:53
other guy's name who came on the boat and then stayed.
00:36:56
Amanda: Miles, miles.
00:36:57
Kip: Yeah and Hurley and.
00:37:00
Amanda: Jin.
00:37:01
Kip: Jin.
00:37:01
I love their story joining Darmaville and just like
00:37:07
creating this life and.
00:37:09
I with him with Juliet, like just it's just so wholesome, I
00:37:14
know, and the way that it comes across, but not in a hokey way,
00:37:16
because you still have everything else going on in the
00:37:18
island and of course you have, like Jack and Kate and the
00:37:22
others, the Oceanic Six off island dealing with all that
00:37:27
stuff, which is super interesting because you kind of
00:37:29
get to see, yeah, what would happen to six people, survivors
00:37:32
of a very infamous plane crash, that suddenly appear.
00:37:35
Amanda: I loved how they explained that too and like the
00:37:37
sort of the the how they were the lies behind it and yeah, how
00:37:42
, what?
00:37:43
How it fucked them up exactly.
00:37:46
Kip: Yeah, I love season four.
00:37:47
It's really really good yeah, it's gonna be.
00:37:50
I don't know what my favorite episode would be, though I I'm
00:37:52
not good at remembering like individual episodes or their
00:37:54
meetings, but it's the constant um because it's everyone's
00:37:59
favorite episode of lost that's season four.
00:38:01
Yeah, it is, oh yeah, wow, oh yeah, oh, it's so good, it's so
00:38:05
good trees is still looking through the books you know it's
00:38:08
okay if you don't have one.
00:38:11
Amanda: It's not a very like.
00:38:12
The show is serialized, it's hard to be like.
00:38:14
That's why, to me, greatest Hits actually is a good answer,
00:38:16
because it's somewhat stand-alone-y feeling.
00:38:20
Theresa: I'm gonna say, based on um these, these synopses,
00:38:28
synops, synopsosis, synops, one of us which one's that syed,
00:38:34
kate and jack.
00:38:35
Syed, kate, jack and juliet returning camp, but not
00:38:38
everybody's warmly received juliet recalls her arrival on
00:38:41
the island and her relationship with ben.
00:38:43
When claire gets sick, juliet may be the only one who can save
00:38:45
her.
00:38:46
In a flashback we see how.
00:38:47
See how Juliet arrived on the island, that's a really good
00:38:51
episode.
00:38:51
Amanda: That's a good one.
00:38:52
It's a Juliet backstory, which is nice.
00:38:54
But what's your favorite season ?
00:38:55
We didn't even get to hear it because we did the quiz off.
00:38:58
Now.
00:38:58
Season one oh.
00:39:00
Theresa: It's season one.
00:39:01
Season one is an inspiration to me in my writing, which is a
00:39:07
fun fact Not that you guys have read what I wrote that is
00:39:13
similar.
00:39:13
It's not similar but like, well, we've heard it takes
00:39:16
inspiration from like the character on the character
00:39:18
development side, um, and I just it's what drew me in from the
00:39:23
beginning.
00:39:23
I love the storytelling of it, I love the character development
00:39:27
of it, I love the relationships , I like the twists and turns.
00:39:30
It was like I didn't know, like amanda kind of said earlier,
00:39:35
like you don't know that you're watching a sci-fi, fantasy thing
00:39:38
in the beginning, because you just think like, oh, it's a
00:39:40
survival-y, typical castaway kind of situation.
00:39:44
Um, I like that twist, but I'm not a big sci-fi person and yet
00:39:50
could not stop watching, like even the smoke monster, like,
00:39:55
come on, it's a smoke monster and yet I want to know why.
00:39:59
Kip: Yeah, do you see the smoke monster in season one?
00:40:01
Amanda: Or do you not see the smoke?
00:40:02
Kip: until season two.
00:40:03
Amanda: No, you see it in season one, but it's brief.
00:40:05
Yeah, right, right, right.
00:40:07
Theresa: But I just remember thinking like, thinking like,
00:40:08
okay, like clearly it's dinosaurs at first.
00:40:10
I know everyone thinks that because like what is big enough?
00:40:13
To knock down, yeah and then I was like I'm not, I don't think
00:40:17
I'm gonna like it because, like, I'm not a big king kong fan,
00:40:20
I'm not a big like jurassic park fan.
00:40:22
And then I was like, but I kind of still need to know and like
00:40:25
I think it is the characters that, like, kept me coming back
00:40:28
to like, know more.
00:40:29
So yeah, season one I'm a fave.
00:40:32
Kip: It's funny you say that about not really liking sci-fi
00:40:35
and they do a slow burn.
00:40:37
Because, it's funny in season two, one of the later episodes,
00:40:44
hurley or Saeed crack a joke that maybe something's traveled
00:40:48
through time and Saeed thinks he's serious for a second, gives
00:40:51
him this look like what the fuck you're talking about and
00:40:53
says like just, or really just kidding?
00:40:56
That's so silly.
00:40:56
And everyone's like oh, thank god, they're not talking about
00:40:59
time travel.
00:41:00
Theresa: And then lo and behold two seasons later, it's like
00:41:03
hello time travel oh, that part gets so like I'm not a big time
00:41:08
travel person either, but like I find they did such a good job
00:41:13
of it where it's not, it's not so convoluted that you're just
00:41:16
like this doesn't really make sense and it's not like just
00:41:19
kind of magic yeah, like it, like it, it works together like
00:41:23
quite well it does.
00:41:24
Amanda: But it is the kind of time travel that makes my head
00:41:27
hurt.
00:41:27
Yes, in the sense that, like I find there's like two kind of
00:41:32
like theories on time travel that like often weave their way
00:41:36
through like science fiction, and one is this like
00:41:39
everything's kind of like a fixed point and like for you to
00:41:43
be there to even affect something, it means it already
00:41:46
happened, so you can, can't really change anything, or that
00:41:50
idea that, like everything you do changes everything.
00:41:53
Going forward and lost is more like that.
00:41:55
Like they like the cause and effect of like everything that
00:41:59
happened to them then is because they went back and did it, but
00:42:02
then like they had to have gone back to do it in order for it to
00:42:05
have happened, and it makes my head hurt a lot.
00:42:08
Kip: Still love it, though, because then, like, they even
00:42:10
say things like well, whatever happened happened, like there's
00:42:12
no, and you're like yeah, but I don't think that's not true no,
00:42:17
you're trying to pull the fleece over our eyes.
00:42:19
Theresa: I mean, I take it as whatever happened happened yeah
00:42:23
I take it quite.
00:42:24
I mean, whatever happened happened is probably the best
00:42:26
thing that I've ever taken out of the show.
00:42:29
Kip: Yeah, it's like a life lesson, but time travel.
00:42:31
But time travel-wise I feel like it still kind of makes
00:42:34
sense.
00:42:34
Amanda: I mean whatever happened , happened it still I mean
00:42:37
happened in the past happened to affect the future.
00:42:39
Theresa: That affected the past.
00:42:40
That affected the future.
00:42:43
Amanda: Well, it's interesting that you said that it taught you
00:42:44
something, because one of your own questions was what, if
00:42:52
anything, has the show taught you?
00:42:53
Theresa: whatever happens happens.
00:42:54
Whatever happened happened, especially whatever happened
00:42:55
happened.
00:42:55
Because that's what christian says at the end.
00:42:57
He's like I think that's what he said like everything that
00:43:00
happened happened or something like that or whatever, and like
00:43:03
that's how I feel about the past .
00:43:04
Whatever happened happened can't change it yeah it is what
00:43:07
it is.
00:43:07
And then, in the words of mama june, it is what it is shut.
00:43:10
And then, in the words of Mama June, it is what it is Shut up.
00:43:12
And move on even.
00:43:15
Kip: Stevens.
00:43:15
So you know we have two very compelling shows.
00:43:19
Amanda: Some might say philosophical wonders.
00:43:22
Kip: Yeah, you have Lost, and.
00:43:24
Amanda: Here comes Honey, boo Boo, here comes Honey.
00:43:26
Kip: Boo, boo, and that's about the difference in Teresa's likes
00:43:30
.
00:43:31
Theresa: Like that's pretty much the whole continuum.
00:43:32
I like a lot of things, Right.
00:43:34
What about you?
00:43:34
Has it?
00:43:34
Kip: taught you anything I don't know?
00:43:35
I was trying to think about that and I can't really think of
00:43:40
anything.
00:43:41
It taught me.
00:43:41
I don't learn things very easily.
00:43:44
Of course you do Very easily Of course you do Very easily.
00:43:48
Amanda: Well, it taught me that situations and people can have a
00:43:53
very profound effect on your life, To the point where, like
00:44:07
you know, I think a good example of that is Sawyer and Juliet
00:44:09
part ways and Sawyer, in theory, goes on to live a very long you
00:44:17
know blissful life some people hypothesize that him and Kate
00:44:18
get together.
00:44:18
Some people hypothesize that he spends time with his child.
00:44:21
Whatever it may be, when they all go back, you know and some
00:44:26
of them died on the island, some died here, some died there,
00:44:29
whoever died when they all end up back there together because
00:44:34
that was the most important part of their life for them, and so
00:44:38
you know, it kind of taught me that you know you don't
00:44:41
necessarily know in the moment what is going to have like as
00:44:45
big a profound effect on you overall, as big a profound
00:44:53
effect on you overall, and you really should just, you know,
00:44:54
embrace the connections and experiences and stuff you're
00:44:55
having, because it could end up being the thing that you hold on
00:44:58
to until whatever comes next, kind of thing.
00:45:01
Kip: Yeah, right, yeah, that's very nice that is nice um, I'll
00:45:07
go in a different direction.
00:45:08
In that, lost did teach me to appreciate filler episodes.
00:45:14
Theresa: And.
00:45:15
Kip: I do think that that is a Lost art in TV these days
00:45:20
because you have very short seasons, very direct and
00:45:26
specific stories that are mapped out to the T from before they
00:45:31
even start filming.
00:45:31
And Lost had to do filler episodes because they were.
00:45:36
They had a order of 22 episodes to fill and not everyone could
00:45:40
be a banger and so they had to do you know some really
00:45:43
ridiculous episodes and they've sort of become known to be um
00:45:48
over the years.
00:45:49
Just a renewed appreciation for some of these less than you
00:45:54
know um, not the uh jack bender directed episodes and damon and
00:46:00
carlton q's written episodes, the, the less friendly ones, the
00:46:04
filler episodes razzle, dazzle love for the filler it's true
00:46:08
you do need time, like your brain needs to process right.
00:46:12
Amanda: Like at the end of the day, you can't constantly be
00:46:15
taking in like this higher level .
00:46:17
Like it's the same reason.
00:46:18
Like we can't all read like proust and shakespeare all day
00:46:23
long.
00:46:23
Like sometimes you have to read a betty and veronica well, you
00:46:25
know like, yeah, we could go philosophical.
00:46:28
Kip: You need filler in your life too like oh, yeah, yeah,
00:46:30
like you were just saying you can't and not every day can be
00:46:32
the best day of your life, god no.
00:46:35
Amanda: All right, a couple more .
00:46:36
What is your favorite connection relationship?
00:46:40
I think we've all kind of hinted at how much we love one
00:46:43
relationship, but it doesn't even have to be a romantic one.
00:46:47
Theresa: Yeah, my favorite romantic one, sorry, and Juliet,
00:46:53
my favorite non-romantic one.
00:46:54
I have to think about it.
00:46:56
Kip: My favorite non-romantic one is Jin Hurley and Sawyer.
00:47:01
Oh, as a trio, yes, I think that's season three, when
00:47:06
they're working on the van.
00:47:08
Amanda: Oh, so good.
00:47:09
Kip: Just them together is so good.
00:47:11
And then later on jinn and and just sawyer because hurley's
00:47:15
been off the island.
00:47:16
But uh, romantic, probably sawyer and juliet, like it's
00:47:22
just so cute yeah it's so beautiful and so unexpected yeah
00:47:26
, I know she just changes him in such a positive way.
00:47:30
Theresa: They're so cute together I think I'm with you on
00:47:35
the non-romantic one.
00:47:36
I was going to say, yeah, like Sawyer and Jin, like their
00:47:39
bromance is so freaking cute.
00:47:41
Kip: Yeah, I know Well, just like Sawyer and Hurley, even
00:47:45
like from season one and two, where he basically like makes
00:47:48
Hurley's life a living hell and they become kind of bros.
00:47:52
Amanda: Yeah, it's nice to see that growth I love sorry, and
00:47:56
juliet obviously, um I there's like literally like nothing
00:48:02
toxic about their relationship at all.
00:48:04
It's literally perfect, um.
00:48:06
But I think I really like I don't know, I like Jack and
00:48:11
Sawyer.
00:48:11
I think it's really cute at the end, even when they like shake
00:48:14
hands in the church like and share that kind of like.
00:48:16
They're just something seemed like really like this, like
00:48:20
settled understanding between them that took literally seasons
00:48:23
and years to develop.
00:48:24
I think Locke and Jack have a cool relationship, like it
00:48:27
doesn't always have to be like a cool relationship like it
00:48:29
doesn't always have to be like a good relationship to be
00:48:30
interesting like they obviously don't get along very well at a
00:48:32
lot of points, but they end up being really important for each
00:48:35
other.
00:48:36
I think honorable mention for like relationship, though,
00:48:40
should also be for Desmond and Penny because they're so cute,
00:48:43
they're good, they are really cute.
00:48:45
So, yeah, it's not a lot okay, so what you know, this is kind
00:48:56
of something I think maybe we could like end on in terms of
00:49:00
this is what was your favorite kind of eureka moment on lost um
00:49:04
, or like something that was answered or finally made sense,
00:49:09
that kind of put it all into perspective for you.
00:49:11
I do have one, if you guys need to.
00:49:16
You can go first so we often talk on the show about, like I
00:49:20
said, about how some people think that they've been dead the
00:49:24
whole time and I never thought that.
00:49:28
But I really think that part of the reason I never thought that
00:49:31
was because I was so invested in Sawyer and Juliet's
00:49:35
relationship and I love them so freaking much that I could
00:49:38
probably act out every single thing that they did by the time
00:49:42
we got to season six, and so when they are in the finale and
00:49:48
they're talking at the vending machine, they literally have the
00:49:53
conversation that she's half having with Sawyer when she's
00:49:59
down the shaft or whatever just got chills and to me again, I'm
00:50:06
not in their minds, but I was like, oh my god, she's saying to
00:50:11
him what she said and I guess you know, you could think you
00:50:18
know at the time, like, oh it, just because they're the same
00:50:21
people, they're just having a similar conversation they would
00:50:23
have had in this life, in this new life.
00:50:26
but what you realize when you like, actually, for me at least,
00:50:29
was no, she had that conversation when she was dying,
00:50:34
because she was straddling the afterlife and purgatory and when
00:50:40
you die you instantly go to whatever moment, right in theory
00:50:43
.
00:50:43
And so she was already having that conversation in the
00:50:46
afterlife with afterlife Sawyer, and that's how I see it, and to
00:50:51
me that was like the Eureka moment of like there's no way
00:50:56
this is anything other than like the afterlife or purgatory for
00:51:00
them and it like really to me, like solidified that fact and
00:51:06
also on like, just like an out of the show thing, really
00:51:09
impressed me that the writers were able to cause that's like
00:51:13
the season five finale to like.
00:51:16
I want to say either the finale of season six or the like
00:51:20
penultimate.
00:51:21
So you're like a whole season of dialogue and story and they
00:51:27
were able to piece it together like that.
00:51:28
Like that's phenomenal writing.
00:51:31
Kip: It's amazing's amazing.
00:51:32
Yeah, no, that's a really good one.
00:51:35
Theresa: That is a good one I know I'm trying to think what
00:51:37
mine would be like.
00:51:38
I think mine had to do with the flash sideways as well.
00:51:42
Um, just the moment where you realize that like it's like, not
00:51:49
sideways, isn't the right word for it.
00:51:51
Right, Like the flash, I mean flash sideways, whatever he
00:51:55
calls it.
00:51:55
But you know.
00:51:56
Yeah, it's not necessarily yeah it's not necessarily like
00:51:59
sideways, yeah, but like I don't know how to explain that any
00:52:03
better than I just did, which was not that great.
00:52:05
So fantastic, Great so fantastic.
00:52:09
Kip: I mean, like my most wow moment would probably be Jack
00:52:16
saying we have to go back when.
00:52:26
I think that's the most memorable moment for me of the
00:52:27
entire show and maybe a bit of a eureka like not in the
00:52:39
traditional sense of like, oh it's all coming together, but
00:52:40
it's just like wow, we were hood oinked once again in like such
00:52:42
a good way that just makes you so thrilled to to keep watching.
00:52:44
Amanda: Yeah, I, the thing with this show that's so incredible
00:52:45
is like there are so many mysteries and surprises and you
00:52:49
know, in some like mysteries even, like you know, like the,
00:52:55
like the new remakes of, like the Agatha Christie ones with
00:52:58
Kenneth Branagh or whatever.
00:52:59
Those like um, like what's it called, like Haunting of Venice
00:53:02
or things like that, like those kind of like whodunit mysteries.
00:53:05
Like we're even so hardwired, I think, as people to be like
00:53:08
okay, so it's not gonna be the really obvious person, so it's
00:53:11
gonna be like the second or third or fourth most obvious
00:53:13
person, so you already know to like not look where you want to
00:53:16
look.
00:53:16
I feel like with lost, it wasn't that like there was
00:53:20
literally no way to figure this, so that there was no like okay,
00:53:24
it obviously can't be this, so it must be this.
00:53:26
So you looked at that like there was no way to know what
00:53:29
was going on ever.
00:53:31
Yeah, and every time a moment like that happened, you're like
00:53:33
yep, nope, did not okay all right, yeah, okay, and they were
00:53:40
so good at that and I don't know that a show like I'm not
00:53:44
saying like I watched hunting in venice and I'm like I know who
00:53:46
did it, I don't, but I know to like look at different things in
00:53:50
different ways I had no idea what I was looking at ever, and
00:53:54
I don't think we've had anything that really replicates that no,
00:53:56
I agree with you because I do.
00:53:58
Theresa: You guys ever do that thing where when you're watching
00:54:00
something, you predict what's going to happen next or you
00:54:03
predict the ending.
00:54:04
So like I do a lot like I'm not always right, obviously, but
00:54:10
like there are times where I'm just like I bet this is what
00:54:12
happens next.
00:54:12
Oh, I bet this is what happens next.
00:54:14
Amanda's heard me do it like tons of times.
00:54:16
I don't think I've ever successfully done it for Lost,
00:54:20
mainly because I can't even think of what's going to happen
00:54:22
next, because nothing is out of the realm of possibility.
00:54:24
It could literally be anything.
00:54:27
Kip: I know, I know so good.
00:54:32
Amanda: Wow.
00:54:33
Kip: I mean it's crazy that it started 20 years ago.
00:54:35
Amanda: It's insane.
00:54:37
Theresa: I can't, like it doesn't compute.
00:54:38
Still to me, Like 20 years is a long time, that's a whole adult
00:54:42
yeah.
00:54:44
Amanda: Yeah, it's almost legal, as people say all the time Well
00:54:47
in the States, Larry.
00:54:49
Kip: Larry Larry.
00:54:51
Theresa: Who's Larry?
00:54:53
Kip: Baby Aaron.
00:54:55
Theresa: Oh, my God Baby.
00:54:57
Kip: Aaron is an adult.
00:54:58
He would be like 20 years old now.
00:55:00
Amanda: Oh, my God.
00:55:01
I wonder if any of that they should interview one of the
00:55:04
babies.
00:55:05
Kip: Yeah, what the fuck?
00:55:07
I was a baby, I don't know.
00:55:10
Theresa: Okay, but first of all it probably wouldn't be,
00:55:11
probably wouldn't be 20.
00:55:11
It'd probably be like 25.
00:55:12
Cause those babies were huge.
00:55:14
Kip: Also, there was many years in between.
00:55:17
Yeah, that's so funny, but like well, no, I guess yeah.
00:55:20
Amanda: No, it's been 20.
00:55:25
Yeah, be 20 years old still yeah, because he wasn't.
00:55:27
Kip: He wasn't like no but, I'm four years old.
00:55:29
Theresa: No I'm saying the like actual baby no, the actual no.
00:55:31
Kip: I know I was, I know I was exaggerating.
00:55:35
Theresa: Obviously I know that that's not a four-year-old baby,
00:55:38
like I just mean, that was a very big, it's probably such a
00:55:44
big baby closer large baby very big well and it's funny because,
00:55:49
like there, there's things online back even back in the day
00:55:52
, Like is that a different baby this week?
00:55:56
Kip: They're always different babies.
00:55:57
I know.
00:55:58
Theresa: Well that must have been so hard, Sometimes not even
00:55:59
a baby.
00:56:01
Amanda: Even just if you look at the actors like from season six
00:56:03
to season one.
00:56:04
Like that much time was not supposed to have passed on the
00:56:07
island.
00:56:07
It's like there's clearly big changes exactly I know and I I
00:56:11
mean.
00:56:11
Theresa: That's why it makes sense that like walt's, not like
00:56:13
a huge like part of it later because, like I mean, how could
00:56:17
he be?
00:56:18
I mean he was what like 11, 10 and like yeah, I mean, if you're
00:56:25
doing it day by day, by day, and's been a year, like he's
00:56:29
going through puberty, pretty soon.
00:56:31
Kip: Yeah, they must've had a different plan, because I can't
00:56:35
imagine them going with an 11 year old thinking there might
00:56:39
only be over four to six seasons less than a year past, or
00:56:44
whatever it is.
00:56:45
Theresa: Or like a year, at the most two yeah.
00:56:47
Amanda: Yeah, maybe they thought like I know that is part of
00:56:50
like there's a couple reasons why, like teenage shows usually
00:56:53
cast like young adults versus kids or teenagers.
00:56:57
One of them is that over 18 they can work more hours, but
00:57:02
another one is that there is usually less of a change, you
00:57:06
know, between you know 19 and 20 and 25, than there is between
00:57:10
like 14 and 18 yeah exactly and that, you know, maybe they did
00:57:16
just kind of not think about it, but it's like, yeah, they
00:57:19
should have either made it like a little kid that you could kind
00:57:21
of like play change in and out.
00:57:24
You know, we don't.
00:57:25
You're not quite as familiar, but I don't know it's it's.
00:57:28
Theresa: it's hard, especially when you're talking about like
00:57:30
kids, like how to, like you can't keep them young, like
00:57:33
that's not a real thing.
00:57:35
Kip: So before we end, I'm going to read a quote from that
00:57:38
vanity fair article by Javier.
00:57:40
Okay, he says it was a once in a lifetime.
00:57:43
It was singular and irreproducible chemical reaction
00:57:47
brought about by the most unlikely collision of talent,
00:57:50
hubris and circumstances imaginable.
00:57:52
It was beautiful and mystifying and frustrating and oftentimes
00:57:56
quite terrible both to make and to watch.
00:57:58
But I was there at the beginning and to this day,
00:58:05
especially as it grows dimmer and dimmer, I yearn for the
00:58:07
heady energy that came from being a part of something like
00:58:08
that.
00:58:08
That felt impossible yet will most likely rate a mention in
00:58:11
the history of the medium.
00:58:12
I bled for, lost.
00:58:13
All of us who worked on it did, and lost certainly made all of
00:58:17
us bleed more than once.
00:58:18
But if I went to my mailbox today and found in it an
00:58:22
envelope holding a ticket for oceanic airlines flight 815, I
00:58:25
would not only accept that ticket, knowing exactly what was
00:58:28
to come, I would board that airplane with a smile and gladly
00:58:32
open a vein in exchange for another glance, however,
00:58:34
fleeting at a lonely, faraway, inscrutable island where magic
00:58:38
and wonder truly were possible.
00:58:40
So good eh that's beautiful yeah, it's a good article.
00:58:45
Amanda: Check it out, I'll have to check it out yeah, definitely
00:58:47
that's.
00:58:48
Theresa: That's great.
00:58:48
I would probably bring a parachute if I definitely that's
00:58:50
that's great.
00:58:50
Kip: I would probably bring a parachute if I was gonna go on
00:58:53
the airline.
00:58:53
Theresa: I just maybe pick us, you know, pick a seat where it
00:58:56
wasn't right in the middle, maybe, because that sounds
00:58:58
terrifying yeah, that really says it all, though it really is
00:59:02
.
00:59:02
Amanda: It was a beautiful show and I'm excited to get to talk
00:59:06
about four more seasons of it with everyone I know, know, I'm
00:59:10
really excited.
00:59:10
Theresa: I'm glad that we're back.
00:59:11
Kip: Season three, the last long season.
00:59:15
Theresa: Yeah, and the season with one of my favorite
00:59:18
characters of all time in any series ever Juliet Juliet.
00:59:24
But we'll see how the rankings show that.
00:59:26
Kip: Yeah, that's right Because like I can't Juliet has not been
00:59:29
in the rankings yet.
00:59:30
Theresa: No and like I know that she's done some unsavory things
00:59:34
.
00:59:34
So yeah that won't go well all right, all right.
00:59:39
Kip: So happy 20th anniversary everybody.
00:59:41
Amanda: Happy 20th anniversary to lost yeah, thank you for
00:59:45
giving us so much to talk about yeah, literally yeah, we, yeah.
00:59:48
Theresa: We have a whole pod it's three best friends sitting
00:59:50
in a room talking about the show that they love so, so much,
00:59:53
even 20 years later.
00:59:56
Kip: All right, bye-bye.
00:59:57
Theresa: Bye, bye.
